Alaskan Cruises for Families

The best Alaska cruises for families, with details on children’s activities and babysitting.

Radiance of the Seas is one family-friendly ship which will be cruising to Alaska in 2012

Alaska cruises   are a very popular way of seeing America’s wild “last frontier”,   with the main season running from mid-June to the end of August. An Alaskan   cruise offers adventurous on-shore activities, suited especially towards   children aged over eight years old. Activities include kayaking,   dog-sledding, glacier walks, train rides and whale-watching.

Here is our choice of the best cruise ships that cater to families and   family-friendly Alaska cruises:

Carnival   Cruises

Carnival is a family-friendly cruise line, carrying about 575,000 children   each year.“Camp Carnival”, the line’s child/youth programme, is split into   five groups: Toddlers (ages 2–5); Juniors (6–8); Intermediate (9–11); Tweens   (12–14, Circle C) and late Teens (15–17, with Club 02).

Under-twos are also now catered for, with new programmes on every ship and a   babysitting service is available, but not after 10pm.

Carnival   Spirit will be cruising to Alaska in 2012 from May to September.

Disney   Cruises

Disney’s Disney-themed cruises are aimed squarely at families. Everything on   board is Disney – every song, piece of artwork, movie and production show.

Disney Wonder will be crusing to Alaska in 2012 from May to October.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean is a good choice for families with children. Its ships feature   a wide range of facilities, from ice-skating rinks, water slides and   climbing walls, and there’s an emphasis on outdoor activities.

Young passengers are divided into four groups: Aquanaut Centre (ages 3–5);   Explorer Centre (6–8); Voyager Centre (9–12); and Optix Teen Centre (13–17).   There are also video arcades and arts and crafts centres for younger   children.

Its youth programme includes “My Family Time” dining, and extra-cost   packages such as a supervised “Lunch and Play” option. An in-cabin   babysitting service is available.

Many cabins have interconnecting doors – a good option for families.

Radiance   of the Seas and Rhapsody of the Seas will be cruising to Alaska in 2012,   from May to September.
